There is also a non-Seminole Hard Rock in Biloxi, Mississippi, recently acquired by Twin River Holdings. The latter is one of two Hard Rock-branded casinos not owned by the Seminoles and is managed by Warner Gaming, which had run the HRH for Brookfield. It also executed its biggest triumph by purchasing defunct Trump Taj Mahal out of insolvency and launching a complete $500 million reinvention of it as Hard Rock Atlantic City, one of the most successful casinos on the Boardwalk.Īlthough Morgans, during its brief Hard Rock tenure, had the rights to franchise the Hard Rock gaming brand west of the Mississippi, it only did so once, in Sioux City, Iowa. In the meantime, Rank had sold the Hard Rock franchise - in 2007 - to the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which began aggressively leveraging it into the casino business with properties in Tampa and Hollywood, Florida, eventually moving into Ohio (first at Northfield Park Raceway, now an MGM casino), then in Cincinnati. Morgans’ ill-starred tenure ended in 2011 when it sold the HRH to Brookfield Asset Management, which retained the property until 2018. Morgans bit off more than it could chew, churning through executives and money in (in our opinion) a hideous expansion of the property, where it figured to recover its investment by jacking up room rates. Perhaps tiring of the casino business, Morton sold his Hard Rock to Morgans Hotel Group in 2007 for a king’s ransom. The nearby Hard Rock Cafe, however, was a Rank property. Meanwhile, Morton opened the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in 1995, expanding it in 1999. The Rank Organization bought Mecca’s share, giving it control of the brand east of the Mississippi, where gaming was concerned, and worldwide as regards restaurant rights. This is where the confusion starts to come in. Tigrett opened locations in New York, Dallas, Boston, Washington, D.C., Orlando, Paris and Berlin, eventually selling his interest to Mecca Leisure. Morton opened Hard Rock Cafes in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Houston. In the beginning … there were Peter Morton and Isaac Tigrett, who jointly established the first Hard Rock Cafe in London in 1971, then began expanding the brand 11 years later. ![]() ![]() As for the possibility of a Hard Rock 2.0 in Las Vegas, let’s get back to that at the end. To sort a bit of it out quickly, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas was owned by a private equity firm, which sold the property (minus name rights) to Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Hotels. ![]()
